What is the Root Chakra?
In the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the first chakra is associated with “Malkuth” (Kingdom). Its four petals represent the four elements of the material world. Within this square lies a small inverted triangle, connected to the central channel. This symbolizes the Root Chakra’s power to connect with the Earth. Inside the inverted triangle, a Kundalini serpent coils around Shiva’s upward-facing lingam. The Root Chakra is where Kundalini’s energy rests. At the center of the square is the seed sound “Lam,” which embodies the essence of this chakra.
The Sanskrit name for this chakra is “Muladhara,” meaning “root support.” Located at the perineum, near the tailbone, it’s the first of the seven main chakras in the human body. As its name suggests, it represents the foundation of life force energy.

Root Chakra Functions
The Root Chakra absorbs energy from Mother Earth. It provides support for our legs and entire body while channeling life energy upwards to other chakras. This chakra helps us feel deeply connected to the ground beneath our feet, allowing us to live with both feet firmly planted on the earth – what we often call being “down-to-earth.” Keeping the Root Chakra balanced helps maintain our overall physical health.
This first chakra is linked to our most solid physical attributes. It corresponds to the densest parts of our body, like bones, the large intestine (which processes solid matter), and our entire physical form. You could say the Root Chakra is the source of our sense of security, stability, and motivation. It’s the foundation of our life force.

The Root Chakra appears as a deep red color. Red is the color of beginnings and has the longest wavelength in the visible spectrum. It vibrates at the slowest frequency we can see.
When our feet touch the ground, our nervous system connects with the earth element of the first chakra. This creates a physical response to the constant pull of gravity, keeping us anchored to our earthly existence.
Signs of a Balanced Root Chakra
- You have regular eating and sleeping habits, don’t overwork yourself, exercise regularly, have a healthy sense of sexuality, and love your body.
- You often spend time in nature, have strong vitality, good health, abundant energy, a strong immune system, and good blood circulation.
- You enjoy how you earn money and feel satisfied with your level of material abundance. You feel nourished by the physical world around you.
- You live without worry or fear, and have a zest for life and a readiness to act. You live in the present, feel stable and secure, and rarely experience doubt or anxiety.
- You experience trust and comfort in life and accept yourself fully.
When the Root Chakra functions perfectly and in harmony with other chakras, we become secure, stable, determined, positive yet calm, loyal, and patient. We feel a sense of contentment from a grounded, feminine mindset: “I need nothing, I’m not in danger, and I have all the resources I need.”
We feel rooted, able to navigate the world with ease, accepting of everything around us. We effortlessly receive material goods, money, and gifts. All our needs are met. This is what it means to have complete trust in life itself.
Signs of an Imbalanced Root Chakra
- Insomnia, mental stress, suspicion, irritability, and lack of security.
- Facial spots, acne around the lips, premature wrinkles and aging, irregular menstruation, cold hands and feet.
- Low libido, less sexual pleasure, early menopause.
When a person’s Root Chakra is blocked and can’t connect with the earth, they may doubt their ability to survive in the real world or question their very existence. They might feel unsure about their worth or experience a sense of emptiness.

This deep fear and panic can distort the entire energy system when we lose trust in our existence. The emotional impact of an imbalanced Root Chakra is significant. Two common reactions are either an obsessive struggle for survival or withdrawal from reality.
The Root Chakra governs primal emotions related to animal instincts, such as territoriality, fight-or-flight responses, and physical balance. It also manages our sense of self – our “I-ness.”
Trauma to the Root Chakra can lead to feelings of insecurity, worthlessness, or even a belief that one doesn’t deserve to exist, as seen in depression.
Most commonly, people experience fear about survival or lack confidence in their ability to thrive. They might constantly seek money or power to fill this fearful void, look for guidance from authority figures, delve into spiritual realms, or desperately seek mystical experiences for comfort.
If you find yourself feeling unstable, insecure, unclear about life’s meaning, or experiencing a sense of unreality or detachment, it’s likely your Root Chakra needs attention.
Root Chakra Healing
- Daily self-massage: Gently pat and rub your lower abdomen, lower back, thighs, and soles of your feet to strengthen Root Chakra energy. This can improve various aspects of your prosperity.
- Connect with nature: Any activity that brings you close to the earth is beneficial. Go camping, have a picnic, lie on the grass, and breathe deeply. When the weather’s warm, walk barefoot on grass to feel the earth’s energy. Make time for daily walks in the park.
